In a move that provides an opportunity for drivers to win additional awards in 2022, TCR UK organisers are pleased to announce the introduction of the Tom Walker Trophy on a round-by-round basis as well as an award at the end of the season.
For the past three years, the Tom Walker Trophy was awarded to the highest-placed VW Racing Cup and then the Touring Car Trophy driver who was either a first-timer or non-podium finisher from the previous season.
Whilst the presentation of the award in 2022 will continue to acknowledge the same category of drivers, the season will see a trophy presented following each round, with the prestigious perpetual award and replica presented to the highest points scoring driver who competed in the TCR UK Championship for the first time, or was a driver who did not finish in a podium position in 2021.
The trophy is presented in honour of Tom Walker, who was a front-running competitor and important part of the VW Racing Cup until his untimely death in 2019. The most recent recipient of the award was Bruce Winfield, who was presented the trophy by Tom’s father following the final TCR UK meeting of the 2021 season at Donington Park.
TCR UK Championship Manager Stewart Lines is pleased to extend the legacy of the award in memory of his good friend and fellow competitor:
“Tom was a lovely guy and a close friend who was extremely passionate about his racing, the VW Cup, the Maximum Motorsport team and his outings in a TCR car. It is only fitting that we keep his memory alive and the presentation of the award will enable us to do this for many years to come.”
