Monday’s Goodyear Touring Car Trophy/TCR UK finale at Donington Park will welcome a second newcomer to the grid when Isaac Smith joins the ranks for the concluding three rounds of the season. The up-and-coming 19-year old will drive a Zest Racecar Engineering-prepared CUPRA DSG and in doing so, make his racing debut in a TCR car.
Like so many aspiring drivers, Isaac started his motorsport career in Karts, before contesting the Fiesta Junior Championship and becoming the youngest ever Champion in his second year, having just turned 17. Staying with a one-make series, he went on to compete in the Mini Challenge in 2020 and again in 2021.
Looking to make a move into touring cars at some point in the future, Isaac intends to make the most of the opportunity to compete in this year’s final three Goodyear Touring Car Trophy races:
“Having tested the CUPRA for the first time at Brands Hatch this week, I’m looking forward to making my competitive debut in it at Donington on Monday. It took a bit of getting used to the DSG gearchange, but other than that the car felt great.
“Obviously, it’s going to be difficult to say how things will go in the races, especially as I’ve only competed at Donington twice before, but I intend to do the best I can, keep it clean and then push to see how far up the field I can get. However, whilst I want to post some good results, I don’t want to get in the way of those who are challenging for the title.
“This is going to be a great opportunity to weigh up the competition, get used to the car and see what the Goodyear Touring Car Trophy is all about, as it seems to be getting more and more popular and gaining lots of attention this year. And if all goes well, I’ll be looking at a full season in 2022.”
