In the run-up to the Goodyear Touring Car Trophy season finale at Donington on Bank Holiday Monday, we’ve interviewed the five drivers who are mathematically capable of claiming the title. Having heard from Championship leader Lewis Kent, it’s now the turn of second-placed Dan Kirby.
Driving his Power Maxed Car Care Racing CUPRA TCR, Dan’s season has included a race win at Brands Hatch and six podium finishes. This consistent performance has placed him just 21 points behind Lewis with just the final three races to go and a potential 78 points up for grabs. We asked Dan for his thoughts as he prepares for what’s shaping up to be a spectacular showdown…
“It’s all about the points. As I’ve done all season, I’m going to take it one race at a time and then re-group, see where we are in the standings and then go from there. Of course – like it always is – my focus will be to get as far up the field as I can and aim for the podium.
“However, it’s going to be important to keep out of trouble – especially in race one. Any incidents or damage is going to seriously impact the chance to claim the title. That doesn’t just apply to me of course, but all drivers. So let’s hope this factor will keep the racing clean.
“I like Donington and know it well. I’ve had some good results there, although this will be the first time with the CUPRA. Having said that, PMR have lots of data from the circuit, so I’m sure we can get the car working well and be on the pace of the front-runners from the word go.
“I’m really looking forward to the event. It’s great to go there at the top-end of the driver standings and with a chance of lifting the title. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about!”
